#JusticeForChima: Amnesty International calls for investigation into death of Port Harcourt mechanic
An international human rights organisation, Amnesty International Nigeria, has called for a thorough investigation into the death of a mechanic Chima Ikwunadu who was alleged to have been tortured to death by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to reports, Ikwunadu was arrested last December with four others over false accusations of cultism and robbery.
His death and detention of four others sparked outrage on social media as many Nigerians demand justice for them.
Reacting to the viral report, Amnesty said “the killing of Chima must be impartially and thoroughly investigated”
AI tweeted via its verified handle:
“Amnesty International is calling on Nigerian authorities to investigate the killing of Chima; in custody of Mile 1 Police station @PoliceNG in Port Harcourt. Chima is the latest victim of frequent torture, extrajudicial killings & extortion by Nigerian police.
“The killing of Chima must be impartially and thoroughly investigated, with any officers suspected of criminal responsibility brought to justice in fair trial. Nigerians will no longer accept the brutality unleashed on them by the police daily.”
