Published

Nigerian musician Burna Boy and other Nigerian fans have hailed Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, after his unanimous decision win over America’s Jorge Masvidal on Sunday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The win is Usman’s second defence win after beating Colby Covington with a fifth-round knockout in December 2019 in his first defence, Masvidal was a substitute for Gilbert Burns, who contracted the coronavirus days before the UFC 251 fight in the Gulf.

It was Usman’s 12th consecutive win in the UFC, equalling Georges St-Pierre’s record for the longest welterweight winning streak.

Nigerians hailed Usman after the win, the 17th of his career.

Burna Boy, a 2020 Grammy Award nominee, simply hailed Usman in a tweet;

“Kamaru Usman!!!!”

Also, H. H Alabi praised the Nigerian’s tactics in the fight despite critics calling it a boring win.

He tweeted,

“I had to watch Usman vs Masvidal again. I saw a very interesting fight and a display of tacts, strategy and strength. People are disappointed because the hypeman didn’t live to expectation. Usman put up a great show and literally manhandled Mas for five rounds. What a champ!!!”

Dele Adepoju, a student, praised Usman for his efforts.

“The win was difficult but people saw a boring fight. He had a strategy and it won him the fight. Bi one champ. More wins.”

Another Twitter user, Bidemi Adedipe, added,

“This is a Nigerian doing a legitimate job. His win is for all of us.”
