Kano: Five sand diggers trapped to death, four year old boy rescued
Fire Fighters on Thursday, rescued a four-year old boy, Ibrahim Shuaibu, while five others, lost their lives, when they were trapped by a heap of sand, in Dauni Village, Minjibir Local Government Area of Kano State.
The incident, occurred at about 2.45 pm on Thursday, at Ramin farar Kasa in the Village, while they were digging sand, used for make-up powder, to be sold for economic gains.
However, the firemen succeeded in rescuing six persons unconscious, while only the four-year old boy, Ibrahim Shuaibu, who was under the debris was found alive.
When contacted, the Kano State Fire Service PPRO, Mallam Saidu Mohammed, who confirmed the incident, said, five out of the six people trapped under a heap of sand at Ramin Farar Kasa in Dauni village in Minjibir Local Government Area of the state died.
He said: “We received a distress call on Thursday afternoon from Dauni village through one Malam Danlami Murtala at about 02:45 p.m. that a heap of sand has trapped six people, who were digging sand.
“Upon receiving the information, we quickly dispatched our firemen and a fire engine to the scene of the incident. We made frantic efforts to rescue the victims but we were only able to successfully rescue the little boy of about four years old, who was found alive,” .
He identified the victims, as Ibrahim Shu’aibu, four; Dije Shu’aibu, eight; Hadiza Shu’aibu, 12; Nana Idris, 12; Wasila Nuhu, 13; and Sa’ida Lawwali, 32.
The PRO, said, bodies of the victims were handed over to the village head of Dauni, Alhaji Bello Rabi’u, adding that the only survivor had a minor fracture.
However, he advised members of the public, who are into such business to be cautious when digging or mining, due to the risk associated, with such an adventure, as well as for their safety.
