Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss return for Matrix 4 after 16 years

“Matrix 4” is officially happening. And yes, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will both return for the project, 16 years after the end of  “Matrix” trilogy.

Reeves and Moss will play Neo and Trinity, respectively, which are the two characters they played back in the original “Matrix” trilogy.

Lana Wachowski will write and direct the fourth film, too.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana,” said Warner Bros. Pictures chairman Toby Emmerich, according to Variety.

“Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”

Warner Bros. has been working to bring “The Matrix” back to theatres. Production rights slowed the process down. Other sequel films — like “Toy Story 4” and “John Wick 3,” which also starred Reeves — inspired Warner Bros. to bring the project back.

“Plot details are currently unknown, as is how the role of Morpheus will be handled, originally played by Laurence Fishburne. Some sources say the role may be recast for a younger take,” according to Variety.

The original “Matrix” told the story of a hacker named Neo who discovered the world was a simulated reality. The film made $460 million worldwide, according to The Guardian. Two sequels — “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions” — were later released. The entire “Matrix” franchise earned $1.6 billion worldwide.

Lilly Wachowski, one of the original directors of the franchise, gave any reboots a thumbs-up in an interview with Slash Film.

“I like it when stories go out into the world and then come back to you in different ways,” she said to Slash Film.

“I mean, that’s what storytelling is all about. I’m part of a bigger thing. I don’t have any ownership over stuff like that, so whatever story anybody wants to tell, I can’t wait to hear. I hope it’s better than the original.”
