Kidnap threat: Model college parents get special ID cards
Following a threat to kidnap pupils and principals of the Lagos State Model College, Kankon, Badagry, Lagos State, the Parent-Teacher Association of the school has concluded plans to introduce special embossed identity cards to parents.
Kidnappers who claimed to have abducted still-missing six pupils of Lagos State Model College, Igbonla, Epe, on May 25, had recently written two letters to the junior and senior sections of the school, threatening to abduct three pupils from each section as well as the principals.
They wrote, “Kidnappers are visiting the school the same way we did at Igbonla, Epe. We are going to capture three pupils from senior school and three from junior school. We are kidnapping both principals. We are coming in two days’ time. No security put in place will stop us from gaining entry and fulfilling our mission as stated in this letter. Be expecting us!”
Although some members of staff had said that the letters could be a hoax, our correspondent gathered that the executive of the PTA has asked parents to pay a sum of N2,500, to produce special identity cards. It was also learnt that no parent would be allowed to take or drop pupils without the card as from next month.
When contacted, the Chairman of the PTA, Mr. Olawale Alo, declined to confirm the development, saying that “Having identity cards is a good idea but we are still working on it. We don’t want it to be blown out of proportion. We still have to intimate the state government of whatever our own independent intervention is.’’
However, a parent in the school who craves anonymity said that parents had been asked to submit passport photographs along with N2,500.
“I am transferring my own payment today. The money is meant for each family and the passport photographs of both the father and mother of a child are needed. We have agreed that no child can be picked by proxy. No parent can also pick a child of another parent. It is either the father or mother shows up. The house masters and mistresses are also aware,’’ the parent said.
