Lalong signs N177.3bn 2020 appropriation bill into law

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State has signed the 2020 Appropriation Bill of N177.3bn into law.

Lalong had on Nov. 26 presented a budget estimate of N172.5 billion to the Plateau State House of Assembly for consideration and passage.

The governor said on Monday in Jos that the budget as passed by the legislature showed an increase of N4.7 bn, representing 2.6 per cent over the executive proposal submitted to the House.

“We have examined and noted that the larger part of the budget adjustments was on capital expenditure and within the Annual Budget Growth.

“We shall in implementing the budget ensure fiscal discipline, especially as we envisage your ardent commitment to oversight for the common good.

“Let me commend the Speaker, the leadership of the House and entire honourable members for giving the 2020 budget the desired expedited attention,” he said.

The governor directed the Ministry of Finance, Budget and Planning, and all Ministries, Departments and Agencies(MDAs) to ensure effective implementation of the fiscal policy.

He stressed that government would spare no effort to meeting revenue targets especially the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) which is crucial to funding the 2020 budget.

According to him, apart from setting new targets for the state Internal Revenue Service, government has approved the appointment of a reputable revenue expert to facilitate the maximisation of internally generated revenue accruable to the state.

He expressed optimism that more money would be generated through the engagement.

“This and more we must do if we are to implement the 2020 Budget and address the deficit which hovers in the region of N32 billion.

“Like I stated while laying the budget on the floor of the House, funds will be sourced locally and internationally to close this deficit gap as the need arises.

“We are also determined to continue to enhance our capacity and track record of prudence, accountability and transparency in expending public funds,” he said.

Lalong commended the assembly for partnering with him to return the budget circle to a normal calendar period.

The governor said that efforts should be made to maintain the tempo in the 2021 fiscal year.

The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr Sylvester Wallangko, presented a brief of the budget before the governor’s assent.

Wallangko said that the budget was made up of N98.7 billion recurrent expenditure and N78.5 billion capital expenditure.

Bauchi State governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, has announced the suspension of the Emir of Misau, Alhaji Ahmed Suleiman, following the crisis that occurred in Hardawa ward in Misau Local Government Area of the state which led to the death of nine people.

Several other people sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crisis.

Also suspended alongside the Emir are the District Head of Chiromah and Village Head of Zadawa or his representative.

The PUNCH had reported that nine people were killed and several others injured on Monday following the crisis that erupted between herders and Fulani farmers in Zadawa village in Misau LGA of Bauchi State.

Several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The governor had, on Tuesday, suspended the Caretaker Chairman of Misau LGA, Yaro Gwaram.

Suspended along with him are his deputy, Baidu Kafin-Misau and his Secretary, Usman Abdu.

The clash was over ownership of land in the surrounding settlement where herders are located and have been grazing for several years although the land belongs to the government.

The land was to be converted to farming land by the local government, a development that did not go down well with the herders.

President Buhari pays tribute to late Ooni of Ife, Oba Adesoji Aderemi




President Muhammadu Buhari has paid glowing tribute to the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Adesoji Aderemi, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the passage of the foremost monarch.

According to Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President (Media and Publicity), in a letter to the family of the departed Oba, the President wrote:

“It gives me a deep sense of pleasure and fulfilment to do this brief tribute in memory of the illustrious Ooni of Ife, Oba Adesoji Tadenikawo Aderemi, who reigned between 1930 and 1980.

“On this 40th Remembrance Anniversary of the great man, the country recalls the imprints of a foremost Nationalist, very successful businessman, former Governor, Western Region (1960-1962), and traditional ruler, on the sands of time.

“To the benefit of his memory, Ooni Aderemi built schools, dispensaries, churches, museums, and attracted the establishment in his domain of waterworks, electricity projects, and the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife).

“It is also on record that the respected monarch was a Member, Legislative Council of Nigeria (1946-1951); Delegate, African Conference, London (1948); President, Western House of Chiefs (1952-1960); Member, Federal House of Representatives/Minister (1952-1954); led Nigeria’s delegation to Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation (1953); and Member, Nigeria Constitutional Conferences (1953-1958).

“As the family remembers this awesome personality, knighted twice by the Queen of England, it gladdens the heart that his memory remains evergreen. Please, keep this alive, for the guidance and inspiration of the current and subsequent generations.

“May God give us more illustrious people in the mould of Ooni Adesoji Aderemi. Amen.”

Lalong’s Chief of Staff tests positive for COVID-19



COVID-19: PLSG investigates leak in index case results

The Chief of Staff to Plateau Governor Simon Lalong, Noel Donjur, has tested positive for COVID-19.

His status was discovered after test conducted for members of the State EXCO on July 1 on the order of the Governor.

Commissioner of information and communication, Mr Dan Manjang in a statement on Friday said:

“The outcome of the tests indicate that all other members of the State EXCO tested negative except the Chief of Staff who is asymptomatic and in good condition.

“Accordingly, health officials have commenced treatment for him at one of the isolation centres in the State capital Jos while members of his family and other contacts are being traced, tested and quarantined.

“The Chief of Staff who is in high spirits urged prayers from members of the public and also encourages people to submit to COVID-19 testing which is very important in unveiling cases and leading to treatment.

“However, other personal aides of the Governor, Permanent Secretaries, heads of parastatals as well as other senior civil servants conducted the test on Thursday 2nd July 2020 and are awaiting the results.”

Governor Lalong also urged the citizens to continue to adhere strictly to the guidelines issued to stop the spread of the virus.

Recall that Lalong ordered members of the State Executive Council to undergo COVID-19 test after Commissioner for Commerce and Industry Abe Aku positive.

He stated that after submitting themselves for the test, they should immediately proceed on self-isolation.
