Lovers drown in Ekiti’s Ureje River
Two people, a male and female, believed to be lovers have drowned at Ureje River in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital.
The Police in the state confirmed the sad news on Monday.
The state Police Public Relations Officer [PPRO], Sunday Abutu, said that two persons, a male and a female, believed to be in their twenties, drowned while attempting to swim in the river.
He said,
“The police were invited after the incident had happened. Their bodies had been recovered and taken to a morgue”.
He added,
“Group of boys and girls usually go there for whatever activities they indulge themselves in. But unfortunately, on Sunday, two of them got drowned. We were called upon when we got there, we were able to take their bodies to the morgue”.
Sources young men and women usually visit the dam for a wide range of activities including swimming and other criminal activities such as hemp smoking, drugs, prostitution and cults initiation.
A source claimed the deceased jumped into Ureje River while trying to evade arrest from security agents who trailed some suspects to the area.
The source said efforts to rid the place of the group of boys and girls had proved abortive.
He said,
“Though the death of these youths is saddening, the activities of the group here is disturbing. We learned the deceased were only trying to run away from security agents who were on the trail of others”.
