Man, 21, sentenced to 21 years imprisonment for robbery in Bauchi
A Bauchi state High Court has convicted a 21 year old man, for criminal conspiracy, possession of firearms and armed robbery and therefore, sentenced him to 21 years in prison.
The convict, Bala Ahmadu, hails from Mangu local government area of Plateau state.
Delivering his judgement, the presiding Judge Justice Aliyu Usman, explained that the offence contravenes section 221 of the penal code.
The State Counsel, Barrister H. Magaji had earlier told the court that the convict committed series of armed robberies and cattle rustling across Bauchi State including that of Yelwan Kadaran Wambai of Bauchi local government area.
He said during the convict’s last operation, he shot someone in the process and he died instantly from the attack.
In the second charge, the convict was earlier accused of arming himself with an AK 47 rifle, cutlasses and other weapons and robbed residents of Yelwan Kadara of their motorcycles and money which is contrary to section 1(2) and B of the robbery and firearms act of the federal republic of Nigeria.
The presiding Judge said the sentences are to run concurrently.
Similarly, the State High Court number 5 has sentenced one Yakubu Musa to 7 years imprisonment without an option of fine for committing several offences including armed robberies across the state.
Presenting the case, the prosecution counsel Barrister H.I Magaji, said in the first count charge, the convict alongside his colleagues, robbed the residents of Yelwan Kadara of Yuguda Ward in Bauchi local government area of their motorcycles which is contrary to section 97 of the penal code.
In the second and third count charges according to the State Counsel, the convict gave one Ya’u Muhammad of Bonji village a Master Key to snatch motorcycles, a situation that enabled him to steal many motorcycles from some innocent victims.
Also, the convict according to the prosecutor, well armed alongside his colleagues, robbed the residents of Yelwan Kadara their motorcycles which contravenes section 1 of the robbery and firearms act.
The Justice, while delivering jugement on the matter, said whoever receives or retains stolen property knowingly shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 14 years imprisonment.
