Man, 72, bags 18 months imprisonment for insulting Buhari

A Katsina Court has sentenced a 72-year-old man, Lawal Izala to 18 months imprisonment for insulting President Muhammadu Buhari and the Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari.

Izala and two others were arrested by the state police command for insulting the state governor and the president.

Their arrest was confirmed by the spokesperson of the command, SP Isah Gambo, in a statement released on Thursday.

The suspects, 70-year-old, Lawal Abdullahi Izala; Bahajaje Abu,30 and Hamza Abubakar, 27, were arrested over a video which went viral on social media.

The court on Tuesday found Izala guilty of two-count charges of inciting violence and disrespect for civil authorities.

Izala was sentenced to six months imprisonment for the first charge and one year for the other charge with an option of N10,000 fine for the first charge and N20,000 for the second.

The 72-year-old man while speaking with newsmen after the judgement on Tuesday said he spoke out of anger.

He explained that he visited his village and found out that bandits had killed his family members and rustled 15 of his cows.
