The Chief Magistrates’ Court 10 in Gombe State, on Monday, remanded 72-year-old Ibrahim in prison custody for allegedly raping and impregnating his biological daughter.
Ibrahim of Dadinkowa, Yamaltu/Deba Local Government, Gombe State had on arraignment pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Chief Magistrate, Daura Sikkam ordered the remand of the accused person and adjourned the case to November 13 for further mention to enable police complete investigation.
Earlier, reading the police First Information Report, Dalaky Wanma, the court clerk, said the accused committed the offences several times between December 2018 and January 2019.
He said Ibrahim forcefully had sex with his 17-year-old biological daughter (name withheld) and impregnated her in his house.
The clerk said the offence is contrary to sections 390 and 282 of penal code.
The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Bako Shekari, also told the court that police had just commenced investigations into the matter.
He, therefore, asked the court for an adjournment to enable police complete investigations and seek legal advice from the Ministry of Justice.
Police arrest Osun school proprietor for circulating fake reopening date
A proprietor in Olorunda Local Government Area, Osun State has landed in trouble as he was held by police for circulating fake reopening date.
The proprietor was said to have been circulating proposal on school reopening on social media since Tuesday, which stated that schools will open on 20 July 2020 in Osun State.
He claimed that the decision was reached at stakeholders meeting on 6 July 2020 at the Ministry of Education.
According to the proposal circulated, “Schools are to resume on 20/07/20, Children to be only 20 in a class, For big schools, there will be two shifts every day, Morning shift 8 am to 12 pm.
“Afternoon shift 1.30 pm 5.30 pm, there will be no use of school buses until further notice, Resumption on 20/07/20 will run for 3 or 4 weeks to cover for 2nd term for pry6, Js3 & Ss3 only, Immediately after these weeks the full sch resumes for all classes to run for 11 weeks to cater for 3rd term, Immediately after the third term around 1st week of Nov. Schools resume for 1st term of 2020/2021 Academic year of which the first term will end in January 2021. While the second term starts around Feb. 2021, All schools must abide by PTF covid’19 rules on schools reopening.”
A source told The Nation that the executives of National Association proprietors of Private Schools are in disarray over the matter and have been pleading with the police to release their member who was circulating the proposal.
“The person that was arrested is a school proprietor in Olorunda Local Government Area.”
The Special Adviser to the governor on Education, Mr Jamiu Olawumi while reacting to the issue on phone, said:
“Schools were closed by the President and the power to reopen has been conceded to the state governors. Osun Citizens should await the announcement as endorsed by the Governor very soon. We have handed the person circulating fake information over to the police.”
Illegal immigration: Ghanaian authorities arrest 24 Nigerians
Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS), Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority in the early hours of Tuesday arrested 24 Nigerian nationals for allegedly entering the country through unapproved routes.
The immigrants, that included; five females admitted entering the jurisdiction and were Nigerians but refused to give reasons for their entry.
Chief Superintendent, Mr Shradrach Azangweo, South Tongu District Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service told the Ghana News Agency that the culprits would be moved to Aflao to assist in further investigations.
“None of them has been able to give a good reason for crossing into the country having breached our immigration laws and we intend to send them to Aflao for further investigations,” he said.
He said the immigrants had their temperatures taken with initial investigations and were likely to be quarantined at Aflao.
Mr Azangweo said the Immigration service would not allow them to continue their journey and they would all be repatriated after their COVID-19 status so that they do not endanger the lives of other people.
He said the culprits were assisted by ‘Okada’ riders and public transport drivers to the point of arrest.
He warned the drivers and Okada riders of serious repercussions for them, as they continued to facilitate the movement of the West African nationals into the country saying “you will endanger your life and other members of the public for possible infection of the virus.
“We will advise the public to support in this fight since the COVID-19 cases keep increasing, we ask everyone to be vigilant and report any suspicious characters of foreign extraction to us because we cannot do this alone,” he said.
Police arraign man, 21, for alleged break-in, stealing
The police, on Wednesday, arraigned a 21-year-old man, Adewumi Temitope at an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for alleged break-in and stealing.
The defendant, who is of no fixed address, is standing trial on a two-count charge of break-in and stealing.
The police prosecutor, Insp Oriyomi Akinwale, told the court that the defendant committed the offense at about 2 p.m. behind Fabian Hotel in Ado-Ekiti.
He alleged that the defendant broke into the shop of one Mrs. Oluwadare Temitope and stole an Infinix phone valued N20,000.
Akinwale also alleged that the defendant between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. entered the house of the complainant, as well as tore window nets in the premises to steal the property belonging to the occupants of the house.
Other items stolen during the alleged break-in are; an Itel phone valued N28,000 belonging to Boboye Olanrewaju, an Infinix hot 7 valued N40,000 belonging to Adeojo Busayo and a bag containing N68,000 belonging to Adeleye Tope.
He noted that the offenses contravened Sections 390 and 411(2) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.
The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.
However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
His counsel, Mr. Gbenga Ariyibi, urged the court to grant him bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.
The Magistrate, Mrs. Taiwo Ajibade, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case until July 14 for hearing.
