Manchester City draw Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1, secure Champions League last 16 place
Manchester City secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League and clinched top spot in Group C thanks to a home draw with Shakhtar Donetsk.
The Ukrainian side nearly took an early lead following an error from City keeper Ederson but Mateus Tete’s shot was blocked on the line by Fernandinho.
Ilkay Gundogan put the hosts ahead with a calm finish from 10 yards out after fine work from team-mate Gabriel Jesus.
Manor Solomon equalised from Dodo’s pass with City unable to find a winner.
However, with Dinamo Zagreb losing 2-0 away at Atalanta, the point for City was enough to take them into the knockout stages of the competition for a seventh successive season.
Manager Pep Guardiola will also now have the chance to rest some of his players for the final group match, away in Zagreb on 11 December.
