Mayorga drops rape allegations against Cristiano Ronaldo

Published

The rape case against Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been dropped.

According to a report in Bloomberg on Wednesday, Ronaldo’s accuser, Katheryn Mayorga, has decided to drop the lawsuit, but her lawyers have not indicated whether an agreement was reached between both parties.

The rape incident was said to have dated back to 2009 but Mayorga only made the revelation on 27 September last year.

Mayorga filed a complaint alleging she was raped by the footballer in a penthouse suite at a hotel in Las Vegas in 2009.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid player strongly denied the accusations.

Mayorga said last year that while she had agreed to a financial settlement with Ronaldo shortly after the alleged incident, her emotional trauma at the time did not allow her to participate in the mediation process.

Following her renewed accusations, Las Vegas police re-opened an investigation.

The lawsuit subsequently prevented Juventus, Ronaldo’s current club, from participating in the International Champions Cup this summer due to the possibility of the US authorities detaining the player as part of a rape investigation.

Ronaldo is one of the biggest stars of world football and is a five-time winner of the Ballon d’Or award for the world’s best player.

Mayorga’s lawyer, Mr Leslie Stovall, said his client had been encouraged by the #MeToo movement.

“The women who stood up and disclosed sexual assaults publicly have given Kathryn courage,” he said.

“We look forward to presenting Ms Mayorga’s case to a jury in this community.”

The lawyer stressed that Ms Mayorga did not consent to sex with Ronaldo.

“She has been very consistent in her reporting of that,” he said.

Mr Stovall disputed published reports and a statement from Las Vegas police that Ms Mayorga has not identified Ronaldo to law enforcement as the alleged attacker.

He said she named Ronaldo when she first reported the case to police and said police never followed up with her after she spoke to a detective in 2009.

“It’s one of the great mysteries of the case,” said Mr Stovall, who along with Ms Mayorga contacted police in August.

The lawsuit claims Ms Mayorga was coerced into signing a $375,000 (€326,000) out-of-court settlement with Ronaldo in 2010.
