Minor, security guard, others steal N2.7m from MFM church offering box

A minor and two men, Osita Egbo and Joel Okafor, were on Monday, arraigned before the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba for allegedly stealing N2.7 million from the offering box of a church.

It was gathered that on July 2, 2019, the defendants allegedly stole the money from the offering box of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries in the Onike area of Yaba, Lagos.

The Punch reported that while Egbo was a security guard at the church, Okafor and the minor were members of the church.

According to the prosecutor, Modupe Olaluwoye, the defendants, in company with a fourth-accomplice, stole from the church’s offering box.

Olaluwoye added that the fourth accomplice, who felt cheated by the defendants, confessed to the crime.

The defendants were arraigned on two counts of conspiracy and stealing.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The police said the offences contravened sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (revised).

The presiding magistrate, Oluwatoyin Oghere, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N1m each with two sureties each in like sum.

Oghere ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case till September 25 for mention.
