Mourinho Appreciation Day: United fans praise former manager after Champions League exit

Following the trashing of Manchester United out of the UEFA Champions League by Barcelona on Tuesday night, some fans of the club have taken to social media to appreciate erstwhile manager of the club Jose Mourinho.

Two first half goals from Lionel Messi who pounced on two mistakes from the visiting team and another goal from Philippe Coutinho ended the Red Devils’ hopes of another Camp Nou comeback as Barcelona breezed into the Champions League semi-finals on 4-0 aggregate.

Manchester United fans who are visibly angry with the team’s performance and their embarrassing exit from the Champions League took to Twitter to vent their anger and also appreciate Mourinho who was sacked last December following the club’s disappointing start to the season.

In a series of tweets that made Mourinho a trending topic on Twitter, the angry fans noted that the former manager who was disgraced out of the club over poor performance of the team was not fairly treated by the club management and fans.

In his reaction, Nigerian sports analyst Biola Kazeem wrote,

“United fans insulted Mourinho for this Martial. Man, Mourinho really suffered at United. Imagine a manager who has managed some of the greatest players ever being insulted by a deluded, myopic & visually challenged fanbase for a French Wayne Routledge. United fans have no sense.

“For the job he did with this team before he was sabotaged in the summer & criminalized for saying the same things the pundits, ex-players and fans are saying now, Mourinho actually deserves a statue in the centre circle at Old Trafford

“The people who assailed Mourinho when he was doing his job & accused him of every crime, shamelessly ignoring all the work he did because of hatred for his person now climbing a pedestal talmbout “Support the new manager.” The shameless hypocrisy is so funny.

“The funniest people here are the sanctimonious, puritanical hypocrites who think by simply hating Mourinho, they are better United fans than those who always saw the points he was making. The really funny thing is that actually Mourinho did more for United than they have ever done.”

The CEO of NairaBet Otunba Akin Alabi who is also a fan of Manchester United said he hopes the club would apologise to the former manager one day.

He wrote,

“One day, Man Utd will apologize to Mourinho.”

Nigerian film director, Imoh Umoren also wrote,

“They used to insult Mourinho for winning a football game, for daring to demand more from his players, For celebrating his team’s goal… How do you insult a man for celebrating his team scoring? They really humiliated a man just because he wanted his team to be better”
