My ambitions were always to play for England – Tammy Abraham

Tammy Abraham

Chelsea striker, Tammy Abraham, has said he never wanted to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

“I’m a player growing up in England, playing in the Premier League. My ambitions were always to play for England. Obviously it’s nice to be wanted by two nations, two nations that I love. But my main focus is England,” he said in an Evening Standard report.

“Back then in 2017, it was all about me being young.

“It was a good experience, for me. So, to be going back now, I had my experiences out on loan, I’m back and now it’s time to stay here.”

“For me, it’s a massive achievement [to be in the squad]. I’m clearly doing something right for my club to get attention from Gareth Southgate. It’s about going out there, helping the team as much as possible. And then coming back in and doing the same job for my team.”

The 22-year-old and his Chelsea teammate, Fikayo Tomori, were handed a first call-up for the Three Lions by manager Gareth Southgate.  The development had angered Nigerians who took to Twitter to lambaste the Chelsea duo.

Abraham is still eligible to represent Nigeria, however, he will end the uncertainty surrounding his international future if a competitive outing for England is taken in during their upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

Abraham already has two senior caps to his name, but they were collected during friendly outings against Germany and Spain in November 2017.

FIFA announces new changes that affect Premier League, La Liga

‏FIFA has ordered that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviews be applied uniformly across all competitions, as they take over direct responsibility for the system.

IFAB, the game’s law-making body, had previously handled issues pertaining to VAR during the two-year experimental phase.

During that time, there have been controversies mostly in the English Premier League, over how the centre referee should consult VAR to ratify decisions.

Other major leagues in Europe like Spain’s LaLiga, the German Bundesliga and the Italian Serie A, have seemed to operate differently to the top flight in England.

Chairman of FIFA’s Referees’ Committee, Pierluigi Collina, confirmed to Reuters that the decision to take over the control of VAR from IFAB was a “natural transition”.

“IFAB as an organisation has the duty to govern the laws of football, including VAR and the protocol and regulations. Once the laws of the game are set, IFAB’s job is over,” Collina said.

“It is then FIFA that deals with referees’ education around the world supporting all the member associations.”
