If you have not supported charities in the past, another International Day of Charity is here for you to rethink your stance.

Since 2012, after a United Nations resolutions, every 5th of September has been observed as the IDC.

The UN General Assembly set the day aside in recognition of the role of charity in alleviating humanitarian crises and human ‎suffering within and among nations.

It is also aimed at supporting the efforts of charitable organisations ‎and individuals, including the work of Mother Teresa, the Albanian-born nun who died on September 5, 1997.

So the day was deliberately chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the late nun whose sainthood was confirmed by Pope Francis on Sunday, September 4, 2016.

Charity itself is the act of giving, typically of money and/or time, to help those less advantaged.

It doesn’t have to be on the huge scale to be real charity. It may just be raising funds by sporting activities to benefit a certain person or cause. Or raising money through a performance of music or other arts exhibition to support a particular humanitarian cause. It may also be by contributing manual labor to help build a house for a low-income family, a religious organisation or orphanage or others considered public service.

One could also donate books to public libraries or schools for the use of indigent people. and for Nigerians, finding a way to help the millions of Internally displaced people all over the country would be huge as charity.

A huge benefit of giving to charity is the pleasure and sense of satisfaction it bestows on the giver. It has been scientifically proven that people who donated to charity enjoyed activated pleasure centers in the brain.

“Making a real impact on those causes, can infuse your everyday life with more meaning. If you’ve been stuck in a rut, whether personally or professionally, sometimes the simple act of donating cash can do the trick and reinvigorate your life.”

So if you want more meaning in your life, 2016 International Day of Charity is another chance.
