NGF to engage AGF on financial autonomy for states’ judiciary, legislature

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has said that its Legal Committee would engage the Attorney- General of the Federation to reflect on the implications of the recently passed Executive Order 10, 2020 on governance at the sub-national level.

The forum disclosed this in a communiqué signed by its Chairman and Governor of Ekiti, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, issued to newsmen on Thursday in Abuja, after its 9th COVID-19 teleconference meeting held on Wednesday.

The NGF Legal Committee, according to the communiqué, comprises the governors of Sokoto State Plateau and Ondo State.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Friday signed into law an executive order, granting financial autonomy to the legislative and judicial arms across the 36 states of the country.

The order also mandated the Accountant-General of the Federation to deduct from source, the amount due to state legislatures and judiciaries from the monthly allocation to each state for states that refuse to grant such autonomy.

It stated that the governors also at the meeting deliberated on the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

The governors also resolved to interface with the Economic Sustainability Committee chaired by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, to incorporate the contributions of state governments in the Economic Sustainability Plan as a national response to the COVID-19 crisis.

This, according to the communiqué, will be done through the NEC Ad-Hoc Sub-Committee on COVID-19 comprising the governors of Kaduna State as chairman, with governors of Kebbi, Ebonyi, Ogun, Nasarawa State, Edo and Jigawa as members.

It noted that the NGF chairman briefed the governors on coordination activities with the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, multilateral and bilateral partners, and the private sector through the Coalition Against COVID-19 that were targeted at improving the COVID-19 response of the state governments.

It added that the governors also received a brief from Ebrima Faal, Senior Director of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Nigeria on the one billion dollars COVID-19 crisis facility and update from Zouera Youssoufou, Managing Director of Aliko Dangote Foundation on activities of the coalition.

“ The Nigeria Governors’ Forum thereafter resolved to interface with the Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, on the billion COVID-19 crisis facility approved for the country at the request of the Federal Government by the AfDB, to embark on the delivery of projects that will meet the needs of Nigerians in health emergency assistance, agriculture, and food security, among others.”

Buhari approves new board members for NLNG, BGT

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the boards of Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) and Bonny Gas Transport Limited (BGT).

A statement on Monday by Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, made the announcement.

The new board of the NLNG will now be chaired by Edmund Daukoru.

Members are Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Bitrus Nabasu, Henry lkem-Obih and Rabiu Sulaiman.

Daukoru was also named President of the Board of BGT.

Members are Doyin Akinyanju, Abdul Abba as well as Kyari and Nabasu.

Sylva told the appointees to discharge their responsibilities in line with Buhari’s progressive agenda.

According to Sylvia, the current board members have been on the respective boards since 2005 and it became imperative to inject fresh ideas into the governance of the companies

He applauded the chairman and other outgoing board members of NLNG and BGT for steering the companies to record successes, particularly the Train 7 FID.

He wished them good health and more successes in their future endeavours.

“To the incoming members of the Board, I congratulate you on this appointment and your selection is based on your experience, integrity and expertise. I, therefore, urge you to bring all these to bear in the discharge of your responsibilities in line with the progressive agenda of Mr President,” he said.

President Olusegun Obasanjo, in 2003, appointed Daukoru as Presidential Advisor on Petroleum and Energy.

In 2005, Obasanjo elevated him to Minister of State for Energy.

Daukoru was Secretary-General of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in 2006

In 2018, he became the Amayanabo (traditional ruler) of Nembe Kingdom.

However, Ikem-Obih was a former NNPC Chief Operating Officer, Downstream.

Similarly, Sulaiman was a one-time NNPC Group Executive Director.

Tinubu commiserates with Lagos Speaker over Braimoh’s death

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Sen. Bola Tinubu, has commiserated with the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, over the death of the member representing Kosofe Constituency II, Tunde Braimoh.

Tinubu conveyed his sympathy to the speaker in a statement by his media aide, Mr. Tunde Rahman.

The APC leader also extended his condolences to the Chairman of the party in the state, Alhaji Tunde Balogun, over the loss.

The Newsmen reports that Braimoh died on Friday, July 10, at the age of 57 after a brief illness, and his remains were buried the same day in accordance with Muslim rites.

The deceased was Chairman, Committee on Information, Strategy, and Security of the House.

Tinubu expressed his sadness, adding that he was shocked and distressed by the news of Braimoh’s death.

He described the late Braimoh as “dyed-in-the-wool progressive”.

The former Lagos governor said: “Hon. Braimoh was not just a political ally, he was a dyed-in-the-wool progressive.

“Indeed, it was one piece of news that rendered me and certainly all those who knew him and what he stood for, momentarily numb and speechless.

“This is one death too many in such a short space of time and as mortals, we can only submit to the sovereignty of Almighty Allah,” he said.

Tinubu noted that Braimoh played a significant role in the fight for the enthronement and sustenance of democracy in Nigeria.

“He played his part in ensuring good governance in Lagos State and brought panache to the political space in Nigeria.

“He devoted his talents, resources, and life to the service and wellbeing of not only the people of Kosofe but Lagosians at large.

“He was an intelligent lawmaker, an astute local government chairman, resourceful, and a loyal party man.

“He will be sorely missed.”

Tinubu said the best epitaph to write on his grave is to continue to pursue the welfare and wellbeing of the majority of the people irrespective of status, ethnicity, and religion.

He urged Nigerian leaders to continue their best to free the people from poverty, disease, and danger.

Tinubu gave gratitude to God that the deceased lived a purposeful life.

“My prayer is that the Munificent Allah shower mercy upon him, reward his good deeds, and admit him to Aljanna Firdaus,” he said.

Nasarawa Assembly assures good working relationship with executive

The Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, says the Legislature is focused and determined to maintain a good working relationship with the Executive.

Abdullahi gave the assurance during the House’s first sitting of its second Legislative Year in Lafia on Monday.

He also assured the Gov. Abdullahi Sule led administration of the assembly’s full support and cooperation in order to enhance speedy development across the state.

This, he said, was to improve on the socio-economic activities and standard of living of the people.
