BBC Radio 1Xtra host, DJ Edu, has said Nigeria has the biggest afrobeats stars in Africa.

Edu also declared Nigerian music as the most popular in Africa at the moment.

The Kenyan-born disc jockey, who recently unveiled his radio show in Lagos, said:

I think Nigerian music is the most popular in Africa right now. If you are to name the biggest afrobeats stars, most of them would come from Nigeria.

“The history of afrobeat (Fela) has also given Nigeria an advantage. There is a lot of history you can gather, modernise and mix with current trends. I recently heard a Cape Verdean singing Davido’s song and I was amazed.”

Speaking on the inspiration behind his new show, ‘This is Africa’, the media personality  said,

“It was inspired by the need to promote African music. It was also inspired by the need to put the spotlight on a lot of African artistes who are big in their corners of the continent but don’t get highlighted. It’s basically about celebrating African artistes across Africa and the world.

The disc jockey also noted that he has always loved music, adding that he initially wanted to become a dancer.

“I have always loved music and wanted to dance. But I felt that dancers were always sweating, so I decided to switch careers. I reasoned that being a DJ was an easier way for me to make money.

I wouldn’t have to go dancing and changing outfits. However, I still dance. I can perform different styles like ‘zanku’ and ‘shaku shaku,” he said.

On some of the mistakes entertainers make that ruin their careers, DJ Edu said,

“A lot of people come into the industry and go. But, we are in unique positions as DJs. We see mistakes that are being repeated over and again. People are getting big deals and becoming popular but they don’t understand the business side of what they do.”
