Nigeria has no mental health legislation – Medical Doctor

Published

A Nigerian Doctor, Yinka Olomojobi, has stated that Nigeria has no mental health legislation.

The medical practitioner made this statement at his book presentation titled “Medical and health law.”

He stated that the country does not have a dynamic medical legislation that tackles certain areas of health.

Speaking at the Quintessence shopping gallery in Ikoyi, the lecturer said, ” As a scholar who is interested in where the law connects with the human phase between doctors, lawyers and patients. The law has not been dynamic in protecting human rights to good health. Doctors have been overstretched with lack of funding which is why most of them seeks greener pastures abroad. Lawyers are after doctors on the issue of negligence and only the rich has access to basic medical health care. I also discovered there is no mental health legislation in Nigeria. All these and many more are the objectives of writing this book to find the synergy between legal and medical practitioners with the less privileged in the society who are unaware of their legal rights as bonafide citizens_ “.

The book reviewer, Mr Kayode Oseni noted that the book has thirteen chapters and over 1,350 pages with subtopics centred on right to health, access to health, Nigerian health system, mental health, confidentiality, medical negligence, surrogacy and other topics.

According to the book reviewer, the author and lawyer, Olomojobi is eminently knowledgeable and qualified to write the book as he possesses a B.sc, M.sc in Law from the University of Liberty, PhD in Lancaster, a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

He has written over five books on human rights, women’s right, Jihad in Africa, Religious radicalism in a political sense, Islam and conflict in Northern Nigeria.

Among the guest who graced the book launch were former Justice Okojie, Aare Adetola Emmanuel King, Mr Kunle Ogunba SAN, Mr Kemi Balogun SAN, Mr John Odubela SAN, Mr Olusegun Sipeolu and graduates/undergraduates of Olabisi Onabanjo University and Babcock university respectively.
