The consultative meeting on Avian Influenza which was attended by state commissioners of Agric and Directors of Vet Service in Abuja, is to review past experiences and arrive at agreeable and preventive measures against bird flu.
Other issues examined include insurance for the poultry industry; sustainable and participatory cost sharing compensation for farmers. Also is the effective regulation of the poultry industry, adherence to biosecurity and hygienic practices also form part of the consultative discussions.
Some of the challenges identified during the meeting include lack of compliance with on-farm quarantine measures and movement restriction of infected poultry. And violation of bio-security measures which leads to rapid spread of the disease to other areas and states.
The reluctance of poultry farmers to register with State Vet services for easy monitoring & regulations was also identified as a challenge.
It was reported that the Federal Government is aware of the general challenges faced by poultry farmers and some measures have been taken to address them. A reasonable quantities of disease containment materials have been provided to all states of the federation and the FCT.
