Nigerian man quits Twitter after calling for bombing of Abuja mosque

Published

A Nigerian man who called for the bombing of Abuja Central Mosque following shootings at two New Zealand mosques has finally quit Twitter.

WuzupNaija reports that at least 49 people were killed and about 20 injured when a gunman opened fire on worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Friday.

The man identified as Comrade Chidi (@Legitchidi) had called for the replication of the New Zealand shootings at the Abuja central mosque in his response to a Tweet by the former Director General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), Dr Joe Abah, who condemned the attack.

Dr Abah wrote:

“Why would anybody just go into a mosque where people are praying and kill them? Why? We must condemn all forms of extremism: religious, racial, ideological or political. #NewZealandMosqueAttacks”

The Twitter user replied to Abah’s tweet:

“Let them shift to Abuja central mosque abeg..we need them there”

His tweet generated controversies on Twitter over the weekend, with social media users calling on security agencies to place him on security watch, while some also reported his account to Twitter for promoting violence and terrorism.

Dr Abah also asked his followers to report the account to Twitter.

He wrote:

“I asked why people will go to a mosque and kill people praying. Below is one of the comments to my tweet. I will be reporting the tweet below to the security forces just in case. Please join me to report it to Twitter as well. Thanks.”

Chidi later deleted the tweet and tendered an apology, but his apology seem to fall on the deaf ear of Nigerians who were enraged by his tweet.

When he couldn’t stand the heat his tweet had generated, Chidi deleted his Twitter account and quit the social media platform following heightened attack and rage targeted at him by Nigerians.
