Nigerians react to Supreme Court ruling on Kogi governorship election result

Published

Nigeria’s Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday, September 20, 2016, that Yahaya Bello of the All Progressives Party remains the elected governor of Kogi State.

The court dismissed the appeal by James Faleke, the deputy governorship candidate of Abubakar Audu, who died before the election result was announced last year and who was substituted in the supplementary election by Bello.

The apex court also dismissed all the appeals filed by all the parties against Bello.

Faleke contended that Audu had won the election and there was no need for the supplementary election.

He argued that as the joint holder of Audu’s ticket, he should be declared the winner of the election.

The justices of the Supreme Court said reasons for all the failed applications would be given on Friday, the 30th of September, 2016.

Hours after the ruling of the apex court was announced, Nigerians have taken to social media to comment on the court ruling.

Many of the commenters believe the ruling was right, while other feel it was an injustice against Alhaji Idris Wada, who contested the election on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
