Nigerians share experiences after Lagos MC accuses police of demanding N10,000 for ‘statement’
An MC has accused the operatives of the Lagos State Police Command of extortion when he went to make a report at a police station in Maroko area.
WuzupNaija gathered that MC Abbey da prof – or @mcabbey on Twitter – was involved in a minor accident which damaged the rear light of his car.
According to him, he had proceeded to the police station to make a report and get documentation for insurance purposes. However, the officers he met at the station demanded he pays N10,000 before making a statement.
Sharing his experience on Twitter, MC Abbey da prof wrote:
This so annoying had an accident and needed to go write a statement at the police station in Maroko, Oniru Lekki so I can I have it documented for insurance sake and the police were asking me to pay 10k for the statement. This is shameful.

MC Abbey da prof’s experience at the hands of the police has triggered a series of similar experiences being shared on Twitter.
One Babatunde/@barbatuneday, who had a similar experience in Kaduna, noted that DPO signature is no longer free.
…I had such an experience in Kaduna last year. I think it’s a general thing in all our police stations. You have to pay for anything that is to be printed on @PoliceNG letterhead. Moreover, DPO’s signature is not FREE!
It’s a systemic problem.@segalink— Babatunde (@barbatuneday) March 15, 2019
A Delta man, one Mowoe Godfrey/@MowoeG, had his own taste of the corrupt practices of the police when he visited a police station to make a report in Otor-Udu police station in Udu LGA of Delta state.
He wrote,
A travel agent scammed me and I reported to the Police in Area G. They charged me N20,000 to make the case official. The reason most people are joining police. Extra cash and not the salary.

Yes oh, they tell you to pay some money to send radio signal, they did that to us for my aunt’s stolen vehicle, & when we eventually saw the car by ourselves & took it to the station to show them we had found it, they said park the car & demanded 30k before she could carry it??

This is exactly what I talked about while watching The Marine 4 Moving Target. While in other climes, the state bears the cost of investigations, in Nigeria the victim of crime or accident foots the bill.@PoliceNG when shall we outgrow this colonial structure?

A friend of mind got robbed in his house, valuables stolen. Went to police to log a complain. He was asked to pay 2k for letterhead. Question is why do we pay tax and what is the use of police budget yearly? Might as well let the police be a revenue generating agency name?
