Nigeria’s Amina Yuguda, bags BBC world news award
A Nigerian journalist, Amina Yuguda, has won the third BBC World News Komla Dumor Award.
Yuguda was all joy as she twitted about her latest achievements. The Gotel television presenter whose profile says she is a ‘broadcast Journalist, a sucker for a good laugh, bleeding heart and quiet revolutionary.’ in a series of tweets could not contain her joy.
She wrote, “When a small town girl gets a global stage, Wow#BBCKomla award 2017#.
“I’m gonna be on BBC world news in 10mins#BBCKomlaaward2017#super excited!
Yuguda also thanked her mentors and teachers who saw the potential in her.
“#komla 2017#Today I thank all my Teachers who helped me get here. Starting with the first one, my Mum.
“#BBCKomla 2017#@rakidi @paulroyall @khadijapatel My teachers who saw the potential long before many.Thank you.”
According to BBC, The award was created to honour Komla Dumor, a presenter for BBC World News, who died suddenly aged 41 in 2014.
The presenter also told BBC that her win was a huge honour.
Yuguda said, “I was overwhelmed with joy. Storytellers have always had an important role in Africa… this is what defines us. Today journalists are taking on that responsibility.”
“With little or no formal education, my countrymen can hold their own on a variety of topics, including the Trump presidency in America, North Korea’s defiance, Russia’s foreign relations under Putin, and more.”
Previous winners of the Komla Dumor Award were Ugandan news anchor Nancy Kacungira and Nigerian business journalist Didi Akinyelure.
