OTEDOLA BRIDGE! Death toll in Lagos tanker explosion rises to 12
The death toll from the tanker explosion which occurred on Thursday in Lagos has risen to 12.
The fuel-laden tanker exploded on Thursday along the Otedola Bridge axis of Berger in Lagos after its brake was said to have failed.
The State Commissioner for Health, Jide Idris told journalists on Monday that 10 bodies were recovered from the scene of the incident as opposed to the nine initially reported.
The 10th body recovered was that of an infant, while two of the seven survivors later died in the hospital.
Idris added that others are responding to treatment.
According to Federal Road Safety Corps spokesperson, Bisi Kazeem, 54 vehicles were burnt in the incident while four persons were injured.
He added that rescue operations are still ongoing.
It was gathered that the loaded tanker which caught fire ended up getting other vehicles around it burnt.
Meanwhile, Lagos State Government has commiserated with families of victims who lost their lives and property in the incident.
The state government in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Kehinde Bamigbetan, described the incident as unfortunate and regrettable. Bamigbetan described the incident as a sad development, saying that the incident was most unfortunate and regrettable.
Bamigbetan said,
“On behalf of the Lagos State Government, we extend our deepest commiseration to the families of persons who lost their lives as well as properties to the incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this time of pain and grief.
“As a government, we would not relent in putting measures in place to ensure safety of lives and property of all residents.”
