Palm Sunday: Police arrest 10 pastors for violating Covid-19 lockdown order in Akwa Ibom
The Eket Divisional Police Command in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has arrested 10 pastors for allegedly violating lockdown order of the state government.
The pastors from different denominations were nabbed by the task force on COVID-19 Preventive compliance for holding church services which were against the lockdown order
Governor Udom Emmanuel had on Thursday in a statewide broadcast ordered a total lockdown across the state, prohibiting gathering of any kind including church services
The broadcast followed the announcement by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) that five persons had tested positive to Coronavirus in the State.
It was gathered that some Churches in Eket flouted the order and opened on Sunday as members gathered in large numbers.
Our correspondent reports that the Eket branch pastor the Deeper Life Bible Church and a pastor of the United African Evangelical church were among those arrested Sunday morning by the police.
They were arrested and taken to the Eket Police Divisional headquarters where they were made to sit in a long bench with their Bibles.
The Divisional Police officer, Mr Sunday Diggah said the pastors might be prosecuted for violating the state government’s stay-at-home order.
The DPO also disclosed that many cars have been impounded and would only be released to their owners after the two weeks movement restriction order.
