Published

Reactions are trailing the assassination of popular Port Harcourt based lawyer Ken Atsuete who was killed by gunmen on Sunday.

The lawyer was shot several times. He was one of the counsels for the former chairman of the Asari-Toru Local Government Area, Ojukaye Flag Amachree, before he was assassinated.

A human rights activist and the National Convener of the Doing Democracy Movement (DDM), Mr. Anyakwe Nsirimovu, described the deceased as a lawyer, who defended the poor.

“He was a fearless human rights lawyer, who was ready to speak the truth at any given time. He defended people in court without collecting money and was not afraid of speaking his mind,” he said.

Barr. Inibehe Effiong, Convener, Coalition of Human Rights Defenders (COHRD) condemned the killing and urged the security agencies to bring the killers justice.

“This culture of senseless killings in Rivers State has gotten to an intolerable crescendo. We can no longer pretend that all is well. The brutal killing of this lawyer is one murder too many. The Federal Government cannot continue to treat the violence in Rivers State with levity,” Effiong said.

My thoughts are with his family. May he rest in peace. We call on the Rivers State police commissioner and all the relevant agencies to fish out the master minds and perpetrators of this dastardly act. I hope it doesn’t go the way of so many other ‘high profile murder’ cases,” Orlando said via social media forum disqus.

“Ken was a great guy. We discussed the Niger Delta issue the last time he featured on our TV programme. The report says he was the one defending an APC member and former Chairman of Akuku Toru Local Government Area who is prosecuted or persecuted as some claimed . Well, I don’t want to insinuate anything yet. The police should do their job and fish out the killers. My the gentle soul of KEN my friend rest in perfect peace,Owiakhena said via disqus.
