Peruzzi’s former record label drags him to court, warns public against doing business with singer

Published

Davido Music World (DMW) artiste, Tobechukwu Ukoh otherwise known as Peruzzi, has been dragged before a Lagos State High Court by his former record label, Golden Boy Entertainment, over allegations of breach of contract.

Peruzzi was previously signed to Golden Boy Entertainment before switching to DMW in November 2017.

According to claims by the CEO of the label, Patrick Anyaene, Peruzzi signed a deal with Golden Boy on 18th November 2016 and still has a running contract with the label.

Recall that in an interview with Punch Newspapers on Saturday, August 4th 2018, Anyaene had claimed that Peruzzi, who is still signed to his label, has been releasing records and he has not been getting paid.

A statement released on Monday by the record label’s lawyer, Platform Attorneys has, however, warned show organisers, media stations and stakeholders in the Nigerian entertainment industry not to broker any deal with Peruzzi until its pending suit filed before a Lagos State High Court is resolved.

The statement signed by Morakinyo Osomo advised the public to “avoid the attendant legal consequences that may follow from disregarding this cautionary message.”

Part of the statement read:

GoldenBoy, by a record label agreement dated 18th November 2016, is the owner of the exclusive right in all musical works and videos written, produced, co-produced and performed by Tobechukwu Victor Ukoh (Peruzzi).

“It is noteworthy that while GoldenBoy has consistenly fulfilled its obligation under the agreement, Peruzzi has, in flagrant violation of the terms of the agreement, been going about doing other musical works for other entities without the consent of Golden Boy.

“Golden Boy entertainment has commenced legal proceedings against Peruzzi in the High Court of Lagos State.

“This is a notice to the general public and other relevant stakeholders in the Nigerian entertainment industry to exercise caution in dealing with Peruzzi, his agents or any other representatives pending the outcome of the judicial process that has been set in motion.

“Anyone who deals with Peruzzi after this notice does so at his/her own peril and likely incur huge liabilities as he or she may be liable for contributory infringement of Golden Boy Entertainment’s intellectual property right.”
