Police, hunters rescue abducted Catholic priest

Fr. Isaac Agubi, the Catholic priest who was abducted on Sunday by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen along Auchi-Igarra road in Edo State, has been rescued.

The priest was rescued by officers of the Edo State Police Command and some hunters in Akoko-Edo local government at Sasaro area in Akoko-Edo after an exchange of gunfire with his abductors.

He was said to have been abandoned by his abductors.

One of his abductors who sustained a bullet wound was arrested.

Edo Police spokesman, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor confirmed the operation. He said Fr. Agubi was rescued at 7:30 pm.

Nwabuzor said Agubi was released unhurt due to pressure mounted by the Police Operatives in collaboration with the Hunters and the Vigilante group during the combing of the bush exercise.

WuzupNigeria reports that Father Agabi is the priest in charge of Holy Name Catholic Church, Ikpeshi, in Akoko-Edo local government area of Edo State.

The cleric was abducted around 5:00p.m. while on his way back to his parish.

The Edo Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, had at the time said the cleric was abducted by gunmen who took him away in his Toyota Corolla with registration number SMK 252 FC.
