Police rescue 12-year-old chained by mother, grandmother

The Ogun State police command on Wednesday, 24, 2018, rescued a 12-year- old- boy, Segun Azeez, who was chained by his mother and grandmother.

Segun’s mother, Mrs. Yomi Kazeem said her son was chained to prevent him from running away from home.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmed Illiyasu, led his team to the residence of the Mrs.Kazeem in Ife-Lagba, Obada town in Ewekoro Local Government Area of the state to arrest the culprits.

Segun’s mother an auxiliary nurse had separated from the boy’s father in 2011 and admitted that she provided the chain and padlock to lock her son with the consent of his grandmother.

The 12-year-old who recounted his ordeal said that trouble started for him when he lived with his father’s family, he alleged that someone charmed him. He said the charm made him detest his home and run away frequently.

He also said that he was used to living in hunger and lack, which resulted in dropping out of school at primary three in Shagamu, adding that he had lived a hard life.

The Commissioner of Police, while speaking to journalists, described the ill-treatment of Segun as inhuman, heinous, and capable of leading to “ritual killing or child disappearance.”

He said the crime was discovered through technical intelligence by men of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad who were patrolling flashpoints and found the boy emaciated because, until his rescue, he was “starved, had urinated and defecated at the spot where he was chained.”

The grandmother, Mrs. Yemi Kazeem told journalists that Segun had spiritual problems and she had been praying and fasting for him. She admitted that she chained him because he was stubborn and she had to prevent him from stealing and fleeing from the house.

Segun’s mother also claimed that she was not aware that chaining her son was a crime, adding that she bought the chain to save his grandmother the stress of searching for him should he flee home.

According to her, Segun has since been living with his paternal grandmother and had only brought the child back in November.

“I was told that he was so stubborn and always run away from home while he was at Sagamu with his paternal grandmother.

“He had continued to do the same and we have had to go and pick him up at different locations in Abeokuta on several occasions.

“He has also stolen my money and phone and ran away and his attitude had led me to bring him here at Obada to be staying with my mother.

“He had continued to also run away from home and my mother had told me she could no longer cope with the situation and this was why I decided to tie him down.” She said.
