Policeman attached to Bayelsa Chief of Staff assaults father of three

An unnamed policeman in Bayelsa State on Wednesday brutally assaulted a father of three in the presence of his wife and children.

It was gathered that the incident happened in the Amarata area of Yenagoa, the state capital.

Residents of the area identified the cop to be one of the police personnel attached to the office of the Chief of Staff, Government House, Yenagoa, Chief Benson Agadaga.

It was learnt that the man, his two kids, wife and newborn baby were driving out from the Children’s Clinic in the area where he had taken the sick baby for treatment when the incident occurred.

He was said to be trying to reverse his car in front of the Chief of Staff’s residence where the policeman was stationed in a security van in the neighbourhood.

But the policeman ordered him to move away and in the ensuing argument slapped the father of three.

The police detail was said to have brought out his rifle and fired three gunshots into the air, hurriedly removed his uniform and changed into plainclothes to hide his identity.

A source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, narrated that “Trouble started when the man was about turning his vehicle in front of the Chief of Staff’s residence, which is also an access road to the neighbourhood.

“The policeman now asked why he should turn there but they were arguing, what I saw was a slap on the man’s face and the wife with her newborn baby approached the man why he should do that to her husband.

“Immediately, the security man either out of fear, released some gunshots into the air maybe to scare them away.

“As for me, I believe we are not safe in this our area, as the police in question normally parades the area with his weapon aimlessly most times.

Efforts to get the reaction of the Chief of Staff proved abortive as he did not answer calls placed to his mobile. He did not also respond to a text message by our correspondent.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, said he was out of town and promised to confirm the incident and get back but he had yet to do as of the time of filing this report.
