The police officer, who allegedly killed two persons in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State is reportedly on the run.

The Nation had reported the fleeing policemen reportedly killed a passerby and another staff of the Abia State Board of Internal Revenue(BIR) in the heart of the commercial city while attempting to disperse a crowd.

The officer identified as Sergeant Chinatu Onyema, is reportedly on the run.

The Nation learnt the gun he used to carry out the act has been recovered by a police team.

Speaking on how the said AK-47 was recovered, a police source who pleaded anonymity, told The Nation it was recovered where the happy-trigger-police officer had agreed to be picked up after several calls to his mobile number.

“The man was contacted after the incident happened. He expressed willingness to hand over himself to the police. When a police team was dispatched to the said location, they were able to recover his gun while he was nowhere to be found.

“Since then, he (Onyema) has turned off his phone and as such, cannot be reached. Efforts are, however, ongoing to ensure that he was arrested for orderly room trial to commence as required by the police act,” said the source.

The Abia State Government on Monday warned against any cover-up in the investigation on the shooting incident.

Commissioner of Information, Chief John Okiyi-Kalu, said: “We will not accept any form of cover-up or protection of this police officer said to have disappeared into thin air.

“We expect the police authorities in the state to do the needful and report back to the government as quickly as possible.

“It is unfortunate that we still have instances where those that were supposed to protect the people are turning their guns against the people of Abia State.”

Okiyi-Kalu demanded that the killer policeman should be arrested and charged to court.

Police Commissioner, Janet Agbede, condemned the action of the police officer.

Agbede, who stated that the command was making efforts to arrest and charge the police officer to court, informed the situation that prompted to the killing of the two persons by the police officer didn’t call for the use of firearm.

“It is in police order that there are situations that you can use your firearms. In this situation, these people that were killed were not armed. We will keep training and retraining them (on the use of firearms),” she said.
