Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has said the only safe place in Nigeria is the prison.

Nyako stated this during the hearing of a bail application filed by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Thursday.

Kanu, through his counsel, had told the presiding judge that he was ready to face trial if his safety would be guaranteed by the court.

In her ruling, Justice Nyako said even judges are no longer safe in the country.

She said:

“Even judges are being abducted in the country. So prison is the only safest place for him.”

Well, the judge seems to be right with her assertion following recent cases of abduction of judges and senior security operatives across the country. It seems nowhere is safe in the country except the prison.

WuzupNigeria reports that a judge of the Court of Appeal, Benin Division, Justice Chioma Nwosu, was kidnapped by gunmen in Benin, Edo State, on Tuesday.

The police orderly accompanying her, Inspector A. I. Momoh, was also killed by the gunmen before taking her away.

A judge at the Federal High Court in Akure, Ondo State, Justice Abdul Dogo, was also abducted by unknown gunmen at Ibilo/Isua Akoko axis, a border town between Ondo and Edo states, on their way to Akure from Abuja on Tuesday 22nd October.

While Dogo has regained freedom from the kidnappers, Nwosu is yet to be freed.

An Assistant Commissioner of Police, Musa Rabo, kidnapped by gunmen along Kaduna -Jos road by gunmen and rescued on Sunday 2oth October is just one among the many cases of senior security operatives who have tasted from the sour grapes of insecurity in the country in recent times.

Recall also that some schoolgirls and a teacher were kidnapped from a Kaduna school recently, they regained freedom after 23 days in captivity. Some gunmen also stormed a school in Kaduna on October 10, abducting the principal.

Just last night, wife of Katsina State Deputy Accountant General, Hajiya Lubabatu, was abducted by unknown gunmen barely 24 hours after her return from lesser hajj.

The list of abductions in Nigerian in recent times seems to be endless laying credence to Justice Nyako’s assertion that the prison is presently the safest place in the country.
