Protest as car crushes two men on okada to death in Ekiti

Published

Protest erupted in Ayegbaju Ekiti in the Oye Council area of Ekiti State on Thursday, as a result of the road crash which claimed the lives of two indigenes on a motor bike.

Sources said that a car, which was allegedly on high speed along the Ifaki Ekiti – Ayegbaju Ekiti, rammed into the motorbike which the two men rode on and crushed them to death at about 2.30pm.

The source, who could not ascertain the identities of the victims, said, “The driver of the vehicle has voluntarily reported himself to the nearest police station for fear of being attacked by residents”.

Following the incident, some irate youths in the community took to the streets to protest the alleged persistent killing of their loved ones, saying, “Killing of our people through accidents is gradually becoming unbearable”.

The protesters, who barricaded the ever-busy road and thus hindered free flow of traffic and as well subjected motorists to hardship, said that “the community has lost so many loved ones to accidents along the route due to the recklessness of motorists”.

The Police Public Relations Officer for Ekiti Command, Sunday Abutu, who confirmed the incidents, said the victims had been confirmed dead at the hospital.

Abutu said that the suspect was being detained at the Ado Ekiti police headquarters.

The police spokesman, however, said that the police had been able to calm down the rampaging youths, who expressed disapproval over incessant killing of their members in recent time.

He said, “The two victims died after they were overran by the vehicle driven by a university student.

Though, there was protest but we have been able to bring it under control”.
