Ramadan: Ex-Lagos lawmaker begins daily distribution of 1000 loaves of bread to indigenes

Former member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Dipo Olorunrinu, has begun daily distribution of 1000 loaves of bread in Amuwo-Odofin area to feed vulnerable Muslims.

The lawmaker, who represented Amuwo-Odofin Constituency I in the 8th Lagos Assembly, told newsmen on Saturday in Lagos that the gesture was to assist Muslims during the Ramadan fast.

Olorunrinu, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)  some days to the expiration of his tenure, said the distribution, which commenced on Friday, would last for a week.

“This is my own little way of helping the less privileged in the ongoing Ramadan fast. We are doing this in the spirit of the season, giving is surely part of the pillars of Islam.

“I do this every year when I was their representative in the Lagos Assembly. I don’t want to stop this just because I am no longer the one representing them. We shall continue to stand by the people.

“These loaves of bread to the constituents is for Muslims, but some Christians are also benefiting. It is targeted at the vulnerable and the less privileged,” the ex-lawmaker said.

He said the gesture was another way to put smiles on the faces of people and to let the constituents know that he truly cared.

According to him, such gesture and others, usually run for a whole month during Ramadan when he was in public office.

Olorunrinu said that in spite of the hardship in the nation, he would solidly stand behind the people that gave him their mandates in 2015 to represent them in the Lagos Assembly.

“Though I am currently not in a public office but I cannot in a jiffy, forget the mandates they gave me in 2015 and those that voted for my return to the house in 2019, though we lost.

“We have done a lot; we gave people palliatives during the lockdown and provided hundreds of face masks when the lockdown was relaxed. We will continue to stand by the poor, less privileged and vulnerable,” he said.

Olorunrinu urged Muslim faithful to pray rigorously that the world should be lifted out of “this dark and trying period”.
