Rangers’ Sheyi Ojo gets snubbed by Nigeria despite revealing plan to ditch England

Rangers of Scotland star Sheyi Ojo has been snubbed by Nigeria despite revealing he wanted to switch allegiances from England and join the Super Eagles.

The on-loan Liverpool midfielder has represented England at all levels from Under 16s to Under 21s and helped them win the Under 20s World Cup two years ago.

But he’s also eligible to play for the Super Eagles through his Nigerian heritage and revealed last month that he is available for selection for Gernot Rohr’s side.

The Scottish Sun quoted the Eng;and-born player as saying:

“I have made it known that I am willing to switch allegiance to Nigeria.

“I will be glad if I am called up because just like Joe Aribo I also want to play for Nigeria at senior level.

“It’s up to the coaches to decide on picking up in the squad and in the meantime, all I have to do is to keep doing my best at Rangers and hope I get noticed.”

But Nigeria’s German coach Rohr has stressed he has no intention of calling up Ojo anytime soon after their latest African Cup of Nations’ qualifiers this week.

He said:

“There are no more friendlies, so there is no more time to invite new players we don’t know.

“We need harmony in the team and if you are bringing in new players to do better for the team than they are doing now, which one do you want to push out of the team?

“Those players must be really better than what we have already.”
