Rapists should be castrated – Shan George
As cases of rape assume a frightening dimension in Nigeria, Nollywood veteran, Shan George, has these to say;
Do you think that the law against rape in Nigeria is stiff enough?
I know the kind of law that would deter people from doing things that are so horrible. Some people that do these things are even married. I think it’s even rampant in rural areas where there are lots of secluded places. I think that rapists should be castrated. I believe that if you tell a man that he wouldn’t be able to have sex again, he would think twice about committing the crime.
Some people think that wearing of provocative dresses by ladies is one of the factors responsible for the increase in rape cases in society. What’s your take on that?
Rapists are generally sick people. I don’t think rape has to do with people’s mode of dressing. There are prostitutes who dress provocatively and go out of their ways to entice men.
What of people that rape children? How provocatively can a minor dress? How about robbers that sneak into people’s houses, steal and rape their victims? Or what of people that rape elderly women? Rapists are just sick people with sick minds.
Diverse reactions always trail rape incidents when they are reported. Do you think this is enough to effect a change?
It is good that well-meaning people react when anyone is raped. When people speak out, others who have similar experiences would speak out and they wouldn’t be afraid of stigmatisation. The government also acts when cases of rape cause reactions.
However, I think the biggest problem with rape is when there is a selective judgement for rapists. Whether a popular figure or not, rapists should be punished accordingly.
