The Benue State Government has confirmed that eleven people were killed in the clash between residents of the state and Hausa indigenes.
This was made known by Rilwanu Adamu, the adviser to Governor Samuel Ortom, on Islamic affairs in the state.
He said the attack which happened in Makurdi, was targeted at Hausa traders, adding that two mosques were burnt and traders’ goods looted.
Adamu said,
“We lost 11 of our people. We have five people also hospitalized in Makurdi.”
The governor’s aide further stated that the death toll could increase because some bodies have not been recovered.
The attack came in the wake of an attack on a church in the Mbalom community south of Makurdi on Tuesday, which left 16 worshippers and two Roman Catholic priests dead.
