Antonio regained his freedom on Tuesday after spending 16 days in the custody of his kidnappers. He was rescued by a crack team of Operation Puff Adder operatives from the state Police Command at Ikeingbabiri in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.

The rescue lasted three days.

The policemen also arrested five of the suspected abductors while the leader of the gang was at large.

Antonio was kidnapped at gunpoint on December 23, 2019 at his father’s residence in the New Commissioners’ Quarter in Opolo area of Yenagoa.

Four days after, the bandits contacted the commissioner on his mobile phone for the second time after the incident and demanded N50m ransom to release his son.

Antonio said,

“They used to give me any food they liked. They will give me garri and indomie. Sometimes, they will give me garri. Sometimes they will do tea for me.

“When I finish drinking the tea, I will go and sleep. When night comes we will eat soup, then I will go and sleep. Then when I wake up, they will give me fish.”

When asked if they maltreated him, he said that one of them “beat me (up).”

The commissioner’s son added that he was very happy to reunite with his parents and family members.

An elated Talbot, who noted that the kidnappers also carted away his educational credentials, commended the police commissioner and his men for the rescue of his son, stressing that the operatives displayed professionalism in the rescue effort.

He claimed that no ransom was paid to secure the release of Antonio, adding that the family was distraught and traumatized throughout the 16 days their son was abducted.

Talbot, who stated that one of them pointed a gun at him on the fateful day, said,

“It is not really because it has been part of our history that when they kidnap, they kill.

“But I give glory to God that my son has been rescued. It has been a nightmare for me and my family since my son was kidnapped.”
