Resist ‘blackmail’ to reverse yourself on Imo governorship, protesters tell Supreme Court [Photos]

A group of protesters on Monday took to the streets of Abuja to oppose the call for the Supreme Court to reverse self on the judgement where it declared Senator Hope Uzodinma as the duly elected governor of Imo governorship.

The group under the banner of Dependable Patriotic Alliance frowned on what it called sustained blackmail of justices of the apex court.

The apex court had on January 14 nullified the victory of Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] after adding results from 388 polling units earlier cancelled by the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC].

Dissatisfied, the PDP approached the court for a review of the judgement.

The group which first occupied the federal secretariat in Abuja marched to the Ministry of Justice where it submitted a letter to the Attorney general of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

They displayed placards with solidarity messages for the federal government and the Supreme Court including, “There must be an end to litigation,” “Stop blackmailing the court,” “We salute the Supreme Court on the well-considered judgement.”

Addressing journalists, the Co-Convener of the group, Mr Nwosu Butches, urged the minister to stop politicians from blackmailing the justices of the Supreme Court for cheap political scores.

He said,

“We are here to urge him to use his good office to rein in on politicians who are determined to ruin the collective destiny of Nigeria. The Supreme Court is the final court of the land, it is not heard of that politicians will by themselves create another Supreme Court of Nigeria outside the constitution of Nigeria.

“When you demand through blackmail that the justices of Supreme Court will reverse a decision of the court, you are indirectly telling them you want to create another supreme court. There is no further appeal after the judgement of the Supreme Court. There must be an end to litigation.

“We demand that the minister ensure the judiciary is defended. We cannot malign the justices and expect ordinary citizens to have confidence in the judiciary. We are solidly behind the justices of the Supreme Court, we salute them for the erudite judgement in Imo state governorship election. No amount of blackmail will stop the justices from doing their job.”
