  • WHEN MESSI RECEIVES THE BALL! The earth shakes and rival coaches sink their heads –  Santiago Solari

It is no longer news that Real Madrid sacked Julen Lopetegui following a dismal start of the 2018/2019 season, what is news, however, is that the club’s new coach is a Lionel Messi’s fan.

And Messi plies his trade with Real Madrid’s eternal rival, Barcelona.

Los Blancos have appointed former Argentine midfielder, Santiago Hernán Solari Poggio, simply know as Santiago Solari, has a caretaker replacement for Lopetegui. Solari, 42, played at the Bernabeu between 2000 and 2005 and was the coach of Real Madrid’s youth said, Castilla.

Solari won 11 caps for Argentina before announcing his retirement in 2011. After retirement, he became a regular columnist with El Pais and in December 2012, he broached the subject of Lionel Messi in a piece titled ‘Falcao is a ‘9’, Messi is Messi’.

Discussing Barca’s talisman, he wrote:

“Messi as a scorer, however, is unclassifiable. Scoring is intrinsic to Messi in the same way that storms, lightning, or hurricane wind, are atmospheric phenomena.

Every time Messi receives the ball the earth shakes, everyone is silent and rival coaches sink their heads between their shoulders and put their hands in their pockets, like someone who has just seen lightning and has no choice but to wait for Thunder. The air trembles a few seconds. Then the goal is heard.”

The pair never played together internationally with the last of Solari’s caps coming in 2004 – a year before Messi made his debut.

“Cristiano is the best player in the world because Messi plays another sport,” he said.

“The really incredible thing about him has been his tremendous stability the last four to five years, a thing of not stopping, something practically inhuman.”
