A human rights activist, Segun Awosanya (aka Sega), has come under fire for sharing a GoFundMe account link to support the legal battle of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku has declared that he is heading to court to challenge the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the February 23 election and some of his supporters had opened a GoFundMe account to raise money to support him.

The activist took to his Twitter page on Wednesday to tweet the GoFundMe link urging Nigerians to contribute money to support Atiku.

While some Nigerians, especially known APC supporters on Twitter, attacked Sega over the tweet, alleging that the fundraising move is a fraud some stood up in Sega’s defence saying the activist has done no wrong. They claimed he did same for some presidential candidates prior to the election.

Meanwhile, in his reaction to the numerous attacks on his person, Sega said he didn’t create the fundraising account but only donated to it and shared the link to show his support for the idea.

Sega is famous for championing the #EndSARS campaign on and off social media against the brutality of Nigerian youths by the police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). In collaboration with civil society groups like Gavel, Sega has been standing up for Nigerians and helping them get justice whenever they are oppressed by the police.

He has, however, vowed not to intervene in any case of police brutality till March 20 over the social media attacks on his personality.
