Senate begins Emefiele’s confirmation process
The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday directed its Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions to consider President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for the confirmation of Godwin Emefiele as Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)
The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, at plenary, asked the chairman of the committee, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim representing Kwara South, to carry out the assignment and present its report within one week.
Buhari had last week sent an executive communication in which he sought the Senate’s confirmation for Emefiele’s second and final term.
He had hinged the re-appointment on the provisions of Section 81(2) of CBN Act 2007.
He had expressed the hope that the nominee would be confirmed expeditiously.
The letter addressed to the President of the Senate and read on the floor, read in part, “I hereby present for confirmation by the Senate, Mr Godwin I Emefiele for re-appointment as Governor of CBN for the final term of five years.
“It is my hope that the Distinguished Senate will consider and confirm the nominee with the usual expeditious manner.”
