The Senate on Tuesday summoned the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, to appear before it over alleged forgery of Senate standing rules or risk arrest.
The resolution followed a report by Chairman of the Committee on Judiciary, David Umaru, who informed lawmakers that presidential aide, Ita Enang, had appealed for more time for Malami to appear before the Senate to explain his role on the matter.
Senate president Bukola Saraki however warned that Senate will not hesitate to issue a bench warrant within one week if the AGF fails to respond to invitations.
“As a Senate, we are always in the progress of development. We will ensure that he comes this time otherwise we will have no choice than to follow the constitution.
“The committee will report back to us before the end of the week,” he said.
The Senate had on June 21 invited the Attorney-General to appear before its committee on Judiciary over a forgery case instituted against its members.
However, the AGF who was absent was represented by Okoi Obono-Obla, Special Assistant to President Buhari on Prosecution.
Although the committee refused to hear the representative, Obono-Obla in an interview outside the hearing room, said that “the Senate had no right to invite the AGF” and that the AGF was not answerable to the Senate” which the Presidency later apologized for.
