Published

Iceland has announced it will be boycotting the World Cup this summer. It comes after the US and EU countries announced the expulsion of diplomats over the Sergei Skripal poisoning case.

The 21st FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place in Russia from June 14 to July 15. Russia won hosting rights to the event in December 2010.

The games will take place in Kaliningrad, Kazan, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, Saransk, Sochi, St. Petersburg, Volgograd, and Yekaterinburg.

Iceland government confirmed the information on its website.

“Today we spoke with Iceland foreign minister, who told us about official position of his government over attack on our citizens in Salisbury on March 4. […] Until the situation becomes clear, Iceland temporarily suspends bilateral dialog on the highest levels with Russia. Hence, country’s representatives will not visit World Cup this summer,” Vasilyev said and confirmed that Russian side explained its position on Skripal’s case.

Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter were poisoned in British Salisbury on March 4. British officials have accused Russia of using nerve agent A-234 against the two, despite official investigation hasn’t been fully conducted yet. Britain earlier announced it won’t send its representatives to the FIFA World Cup that is to take place in Russia this summer.
