SHE CAN BE INSENSITIVE SOMETIMES! Mixed reactions trail DJ Cuppy’s Independence tweet
Mixed reactions have trailed an “innocent” tweet by DJ Cuppy wishing Nigeria a happy independence.
Like many celebrities who celebrated the “giant of Africa” on its 58th Independence on their social media handles, DJ Cuppy also tweeted
“Today, we experience the joy and pride of being called NIGERIANS! The greatest nation. #NigeriaAt58 #Nierian independence day.”
However, her tweet angered some Nigerians who apparently disagreed that Nigeria is a source of great joy and pride to many.
Many accused her of being biased because she is the daughter of billionaire oil magnate, Femi Otedola and has lived a privileged life as a “special citizen.”
However, some came to her defence saying that she had the right to express her self as a Nigerian.

They further stated that DJ Cuppy is not responsible for the poverty and woes befalling Nigerians.
Meanwhile, a podcast host simply identified as Wole also shared a tweet thread that triggered more reactions on Twitter.

“I’ll say this real quick, calling Nigeria “the greatest nation”, especially when you’re in the 0.5% mega privileged bracket, is an insult to every Nigerian who has to suffer every single day because of the REAL and unnecessary challenges they face.
“I get really angry every year when October 1 comes around because what you see is Nigerians who refuse to say the truth about what a messed up country it really is.
“How do you go about fixing something if you don’t admit it’s faulty? Are you not tired of these stupid lies?
“People are struggling to eat, more families are sliding into poverty on a daily basis than one can even imagine, going out to work and coming back home is a miracle, the President and people around him are too busy focusing on re-election to worry about anything else…
“And you, the child of one of the richest men in the country, who has studied abroad, lived abroad, visited multiple first world counties, can fix your fingers to call it “The Greatest”?
“Does it mean you are happy with the way Nigeria is? DFPMO!
“I don’t care who gets offended by this. Someone close to her has to start talking to her about this shit. She’s always coming across as insensitive.
“Anyone who can open their mouth to call Nigeria “the greatest nation” is either in some deep bubble or just doesn’t care about what’s happening. She has traveled the world, she has seen how other countries run. What does she think makes Nigeria great?

I don’t see anything wrong in what that wole guy said. DJ Cuppy is a public figure, her saying nigeria is the greatest nation makes people who are going through the worst in the country feel neglected and angry. People are going through hell here “DJ Cuppy” pic.twitter.com/qAZ2oCWX3t

I get Cuppy can be insensitive sometimes but this is not it. She did nothing wrong tbh, this is not fair

This tweet is a very foolish one. And you should apologize. We have suffered for the lives we live today, but do not begrudge those who have fared better. She is a Nigerian and she can speak her truth
— EDWARD Israel-Ayide (@wildeyeq) October 2, 2018
Perhaps you need to read what begrudge means before fixing your fingers to type other words. Quick help; it’s not a synonym for blame. Like I said, she can speak her truth without bullies trying to drown her voice.

Aunty cuppy I love you but sorry to say you are MAD..Next time instead of ‘WE’ use ‘I’…it goes a long way, much love from your biggest fan..

When did DJ Cuppy become the president of this country?
Why y’all directing all this meaningless senseless anger on her just because she’s trying to spread positivity around the country your politicians already spoilt. She’s not the cause of your misfortune, goan hustle.— Ugly Professor ? (@triumphantOG) October 3, 2018
I think Wole is just radically prejudiced Towards DJ Cuppy on the basis of her ‘priviledged status’.Otherwise nothing else would justify the scathing remarks.
If Cuppy (who has travelled far and wide) thinks Nigeria is the Greatest country on earth, then am with her. #Naija4life pic.twitter.com/qE58uhjnaj

Why do people attack DJ Cuppy so much online?
She tries so hard to send out positive energy, She DJ’s, does music, owns a foundation that helps less privilege, doesn’t brag.. Why the hate?
The only crime she committed so far is being the daughter of a Billionaire
— Enekem ? (@EnekemGreg) October 3, 2018
Why are people always dragging that dj cuppy girl? I don’t get it. All she does is mind her business and DJ.
— •Scilla• (@Scilla_xx) October 2, 2018
If she thinks the country is great to her, then that’s okay because that’s her reality. She’s speaking for herself, she’s not your representative or mouth piece. She also isn’t the reason your parents are poor. Lastly, she didn’t ruin Nigeria for you. So leave her be.

The faux angst towards DJ Cuppy is hysterical.
I remember when Trump said we were a shithole country and you people were foaming at the mouth. Now Cuppy says Nigeria is the greatest country and you’re sharpening cutlass to strike her down. What do you even want— Nazirr (@Fidel__aa) October 3, 2018
So this lady was pissed because DJ Cuppy owns an international passport, travels all the time, wear expensive things. ??? pic.twitter.com/fVChArQXGI

Nigerians want someone from a wealthy family who is arrogant, loud, oppressive and shares N500 recharge card on the TL once in a while.
DJ cuppy doesn’t get that. She low key runs a charity foundation, she is happy and respectful on the TL and minds her business. Wrong move
— Kelvin Odanz (@Kelvin_Odanz) October 3, 2018
Dj cuppy is just being bullied for being born above the average & living your dream. Not like she’s the reason you’re poor.
Y’all are suffering from low self esteem.
— papi G (@meka_george) October 3, 2018
If a rich person can’t give her opinion without it triggering your broke ass then get rich.
We broke people do the most sometimes. Foh.
— papi G (@meka_george) October 3, 2018
What DJ Cuppy tweeted was correct. I mean, everything notwithstanding, Nigeria is still great. I support her.
What Wole said is very true, Dj Cuppy sounded insensitive. How could she?
I support Wole.Yea, y’all are saying the right things, I support you all.
Pls let me be?

I love how DJ Cuppy never replies people who are mean to her on this app.

DJ Cuppy cannot be the cause of your misfortune. Channel your anger towards your favourite political leaders who can’t do any wrong. Their kids studied abroad too.

DJ Cuppy expressed herself and used her own platform, data & time to do that, but grown adults are upset and projecting their insecurities and inadequacies on her which she hasn’t caused you in the first place?
Habatically speaking you need to re-evaluate one or two things.
