Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has criticized the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for blaming the recent attacks in the North on the coronavirus.

Buhari, while delivering a Democracy Day speech on June 12, stated that criminals who killed many in attacks on Borno, Kaduna and Katsina were able to do so due to the COVID-19 restrictions in those areas.

He said:

I regret recent sporadic incidents with tragic loss of lives in Katsina and Borno States as a result of criminals taking advantage of COVID-19 restrictions. Security Agencies will arrest the perpetrators and bring them to swift justice.

“We remain unshaken in the area of security. Our resolve to protect our national infrastructure including on-shore and off-shore oil installations, secure our territorial waters and end piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

“Ending insurgency, banditry and other forms of criminality across the nation is being accorded appropriate priorities and the men and women of the Armed Forces of Nigeria have considerably downgraded such threats across all geo-political zones.”

In reaction, Shehu Sani stated that:

“Blaming COVID-19 restrictions for the ongoing mass murder in the North is outrightly meaningless. The Government must own up to its evident failure and reset its strategy in order to end the slaughter of Our people.”
