Sowore, Bakare meet bail conditions, may be freed today, say Falana

Published

The convener of #RevolutionNow protest, Mr Omoyele Sowore, and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare, have met the bail conditions imposed on them in respect of their trial on charges of treasonable felony and may be freed today.

This was revealed by human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday.

Falana, who is their lawyer, said this while asking for an adjournment of the case on the grounds that the Department of State Service in whose custody the defendants have been detained and from where they were produced in court on Wednesday.

He said,

“I have already explained to the learned prosecuting counsel that we are encumbered by the refusal of the State Security Service to allow us to prepare for the defence of the defendants.

“I had already asked my learned counsel for the prosecution, that we are confident that the defendants will be freed today (Wednesday) from the custody of the SSS having met the bail conditions imposed on them by this honourable court.

“Once they are liberated from the custody of the SSS, we will be in a position to take full instruction from them.”

Mr Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), who appeared for the second defendant at the Wednesday’s proceedings, also confirmed the development.

But the prosecuting counsel, Mr Hassan Liman (SAN), opposed the application for adjournment on the grounds that the charges were filed and served on the defendants as far back as September 20.

He said the defendants had “ample time and opportunity to prepare for their defence”.

Reactions trail the closure of third mainland bridge for six months

Published

on

Recall that yesterday, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Olukayode Popoola, announced that Third Mainland bridge will be closed likely on July 24th for another phase of repair works to begin.

The federal government and Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu have since come under attack as netizens can’t seem to understand why such irrational decisions are taken by them.

Popoola said that consultations were on towards evolving perfect traffic management architecture.

The recent development has stirred reactions from residents in Lagos as they have expressed concern over traffic gridlock in the state.

Some Lagosians queried the government for taking such decisions now despite having experienced almost three months lockdown in the state.

“Why didn’t they carry out this said maintenance when the country was in total lock down, after all some people on essentials were allowed to move around.”

@Aunty_Tp

“My dear governor Jide Sanwo-Olu with Eko Bridge still closed, the New Costain bridge unfinished, the type of rainy season we haven’t seen in a while, this is not the time to close Third Mainland bridge. Surulere is going to be a total mess to get around!

@Chuchu231

“This is some real issues. Federal government will just wake up one day and announce the closure of Third Mainland Bridge with no 1/2month prior notice. The CMS and COSTAIN routes will soon be incapacitated by high load.”

@Fredhodut

“Ahh, this is wickedness of the highest order. Eko bridge was shut down shortly before the lockdown, up till now they never opened it. What alternatives do they give to us now. God dey oh.”

@Adenaike

“I really fail to understand how we do things in this country. Most roads in Lagos are not fit to be so-called. Shouldn’t the FG give @followlasg and Sanwo-Olu time to finish the roads before closing Third Mainland bridge? Do governments here get a kick out frustrating the people?

@Susandamsel3

“Lagos is about to be crazy, why didn’t they do the work during lockdown naaa?

@Ekensmadus

“The challenge with leadership in Africa is the refusal to heed to the voice of the people! How do you close down 3rd Mainland Bridge when other access roads are in their current state? Is this closure really in our interest? Have we thought of the pain many will go through?

Ibrahim Magu’s lawyer opens up, reveals reason for ‘arrest’

Published

on

Oluwatoyin Ojaomo, lawyer to embattled chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu,  has given an insight into Magu’s reported arrest on Monday.

Mr Magu was intercepted by security operatives at the Wuse II office of the EFCC and whisked away to face a Presidential Panel in Aso rock over allegations of insubordination and corruption.

Speaking during a Channels Television interview on Monday night, Ojaomo disclosed that his client is supposed to be praised instead of vilified.

According to him, Magu was being grilled by the panel because the amount of money recovered by the agency from corrupt individuals was different from the figure the agency officially declared to the Presidency.

In his words;

“The Pro-Panel is just to clarify the activities of the organization. They are only going there to clarify the activities of the commission.”

“The EFCC reports to the President and if the president says..yes..there is a lot of allegation..that Magu has done this, Magu has done that..The president felt that because of the image of the commission and these allegations that are flying around…He wants to know what are these allegations. Let it be investigated for it to be clarified and the EFCC chairman went there to clarify.”

“What is even basically the allegation? They said the amount the EFCC chairman announced to the presidency is different from what that was paid, that the money is more. They are not saying it is lesser, it’s more than the amount. What you should understand is that the recoveries by the EFCC is an ongoing operation.”

He also added that the forces behind corruption in Nigeria are fighting back.

“When you are fighting corruption, the forces behind corruption are so powerful, they are more powerful than COVID-19”

“You can imagine what is happening. Instead of Magu to be celebrated, those powerful corrupt persons who have the media backing them are trying to call a dog a bad name so they can hang it” he said.
