The management of the Federal Polytechnic Offa has said that a National Diploma 1 Civil Engineering student of the institution, Ridwan Ajiboye, who committed suicide recently, did not take his life because he was embarrassed by an unnamed lecturer over handout proceeds.

The Head, Public Relations and Protocols, Offa Poly, Mr Olayinka Iroye, said in a statement made available to our correspondent on Tuesday that the polytechnic had outlawed the sale of handouts over two decades ago.

He said that no lecturer was selling handouts to students, adding that there was no way the student would have committed suicide over handout proceeds because the school banned the sale of handouts 20 years ago.

He, however, confirmed that the deceased actually took some quantity of a poisonous substance, which led to his death days after he was taken to several hospitals for treatment.

He said the management of the institution had commenced an investigation to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of Ajiboye’s suicide.

“Up till now, the circumstances surrounding the decision of the student to take poisonous substance are shrouded in mystery. However, the management is investigating the case to get to the root of the matter,” he stated.

Iroye dismissed the report of another attempted suicide by a National Diploma student of Estate Management in the institution as “untrue and baseless.”

He claimed that the management headed by Dr Lateef Olatunji had eradicated all forms of corruption and malpractices in the institution.

He added that machinery had been put in place to curb every form of indiscipline by both the staff and students.

“The Federal Polytechnic Offa is a disciplined institution, a unique citadel of learning and a place for knowledge-thirsty souls, where young people are groomed to transform the nation’s technological situations,” Iroye added.
