Suspected herdsmen kill five in Benue

No fewer than five people have been killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen who invaded Mondo village in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to a community leader in the area, Anawah Joseph, the suspected herdsmen invaded Mondo village, Ukanberagya  Gambatiev Council ward of Logo LGA about 11pm.

Five people were reportedly killed and many others missing, while the community had been deserted.

Also, a local from the community claimed that the invading herdsmen wiped out a family of five.

The local, who simply identified himself as Teryila,  gave the names of the victims to include; Torkaa Gbin, Celina Tavvershima, Ayilaga  Tavvershima, Santer Tavvershima and Torkaa Tavvershima.

“The attackers were herdsmen, they stormed  Mondo village around 11pm when everyone had gone to sleep and attacked the villagers.

“An entire family was wiped out while several people are still missing, everyone has left the village,” Teryila said.

The council chairman, Richard Nyajo who confirmed the attack and killing said that he had reported the matter to the Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, Major General Adeyemi Yekini.

Also confirming the attack, the force Commander, General Yekini said that the attack was a fallout of the Tiv/Jukun crisis of Tuesday.

“The affected village in Logo is close  to the area where Jukun/Tiv crisis occurred yesterday.

“My officers visited the village and confirmed that the incident was a spill over attack from the Tiv/Jukun of Kente following the outbreak of inter communal clashes yesterday between the Tiv/Jukun,” Yekini said.

The force Commander said that he had spoken with the security adviser to the governor who was on his way to Wukari  in order to find an amicable solution to the communal crisis.

Gen Yekini added that the OPWS troops were constantly patrolling the border areas.
